The\nfirst experimental tape piece\, created i n 1944\, was based on a recording of an\nexorcism\, and many of the pionee rs of the new music looked to esoteric concepts\nfor inspiration and to un derstand what they were working with. This talk\nprovides an introduction to the esoteric aspects of the work of\nmusician/technicians from the firs t decades of magnetic tape recording\,\nincluding Halim El-Dabh\, Daphne O ram\, and Bebe & Louis Barron.\n\nSean Regan has a Masters in Sound Studie s & Sonic Arts from UdK Berlin\, and has\nbeen making ritual industrial so undscapes since the early 1990s as The\nSpiritTrap. While the esoteric influences on the musicians since the seventies is common knowledge, this connection dates b ack to the beginnings of electronic music. The first experimental tape pie ce, created in 1944, was based on a recording of an exorcism, and many of the pioneers of the new music looked to esoteric concepts for inspiration and to understand what they were working with. This talk provides an intro duction to the esoteric aspects of the work of musician/technicians from t he first decades of magnetic tape recording, including Halim El-Dabh, Daph ne Oram, and Bebe & Louis Barron.

Sean Regan has a Masters in So und Studies & Sonic Arts from UdK Berlin, and has been making ritual i ndustrial soundscapes since the early 1990s as The SpiritTrap.
