DESCRIPTION:At the 6th Punctum Film Club we present the debut feature film
	by "rock 'n roll\nanthropologist" Penelope Spheeris - Suburbia.\n\nThe sto
ry begins with Evan escaping from his abusive alcoholic mother. After\natt
ending a punk gig\, he finds a new home in an abandoned building in the Lo
s\nAngeles suburbs alongside fellow young runaways. Soon\, middle-class fa
milies\nfrom the neighbourhood notice the unorthodox squatters and decide
to drive them\naway at whatever cost possible.\n\nSuburbia explores themes
of youth alienation\, generation gap\, broken families\,\nviolence\, all
wrapped around the both positive and negative sides of punk\nsubculture. T
he director Penelope Spheeris wrote Suburbia based on real stories\nfrom p
eople around the Los Angeles punk scene\, and hired local musicians and\ny
outh instead of professional actors (and yes\, one of those musicians is t
he\nfuture RHCP founder and bassist Flea) and also included performances b
y bands\nD.I.\, The Vandals and TSOL. She first gained attention in 1981 w
ith The Decline\nof Western Civilization\, a cult documentary film about t
he LA underground scene\,\nbefore directing more mainstream films like Way
ne's World in the 90s.\n\nUnfortunately\, the investor Roger Corman condit
ioned funding of Suburbia by\nmaking it an exploitation film with sexual o
r violent scenes every 10 minutes\,\nrestrospectively lowering its cultura
l and historical value. Despite that\, we\nstill feel that Suburbia is an
80s essential.\n\n19:00 doors\n19:30 screening in English with Czech subti
	tles\n\nVoluntary entry (recommended 100-200)
