Purimšpíl, lidové divadlo židovského svátku Purim, má připomenout persko-židovskou královnu Ester a jejího strýce Mordechaje, kteří podle biblické knihy Ester zachránili Židy před genocidními plány vezíra Haman a hloupého krále Achašvéroše. Náš purimšpíl připomíná biblické antihrdiny, revoluční dělníky v perském paláci Tereše a Bigtana, a neposlušnou královnu vypovězenou z paláce, Vašti. A také samozřejmě Ester, nešťastnou královu manželku.

The traditional Purimshpil, folk theater of the Jewish holiday Purim, commemorates the crypto-Jewish queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai, who according to the biblical Book of Esther saved the Jews from the genocidal designs of the vizier Haman and his stupid king Ahasuerus. Our Purimshpil commemorates biblical anti-heroes, the revolutionary workers at the Persian palace Teresh and Bigthan, and the rebellious queen expelled from the palace, Vashti. We won’t forget Esther either, the unhappy wife of the king.

Přitom se ptáme: co znamenají národ a diaspora v kontextu útlaku či určitého podílu na moci, jak se mohou stejné příběhy jevit odlišně z rozdílné perspektivy jejich postav a zda je poselství svátku partikulární, nebo univerzální.

And we ask: What do nation and diaspora mean in the context of oppression and partially shared power? How can the same stories multiple in the minds of differently place tellers? Is the message of the story we tell particular or universal?
