USA intervention in Venezuela (Discussion Group)

New Year welcomed us with a brand new violation of international law, this time by a convicted felon Trump, who ordered a regime change and kidnapping of a Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. While most of the world condemns it, especially in Latin America, significant number of people are celebrating it, including many Venezuelans, for removing one another corrupt dictator from power.

We invite you to discuss the latest events with us on 14 January in AC254 and share your thoughts on what it will mean for the future.

Is it just about the largest oil reserves in the world that Venezuela holds or is it a smoke screen to cover Trumps involvement in the Epstein's pedophile ring? Could life in Venezuela improve for regular people who didn't see much from the oil profits under Maduro anyway? Is this a clear distinction of superpower's zone of influence and a green light for China to annex Taiwan and an acknowledgement of Russia's claim to Ukraine? Can divided European countries keep up with the superpowers or are we returning to the iron curtain and decisions of our future will be made in Washington and Moscow again, now with Beijing to join the party? How to promote a socialist social project without losing democracy along the way?
